Review

This new volume by the prolific Bobbie Kalman’s Historic Communities
series is as much about slavery as about plantations, since the two are
inextricably linked.

Each topic is covered in a double-page spread that is liberally
sprinkled with illustrations. The concise text is presented clearly in a
well-organized fashion. Picture captions provide a wealth of additional
information. Because of the series’ accessible format,
elementary-school students will find them easy to use and to learn from.

Life on a Plantation provides an excellent introduction to this topic
and would be a worthwhile addition to any library. Recommended.
