Review

Viewers look forward to Mike McCardell’s spot at the end of the Global BC evening news. Whatever sordid and horrific images may precede him, he always manages to leave the impression that there is still kindness, gentleness, and good humour in the world. He has spent over 30 years as an investigative reporter for Global BC, formerly BCTV, gathering nearly 10,000 stories “about ordinary people doing extraordinary things” in the neighbourhoods, streets and alleys of Vancouver.

Some of these stories have been compiled in Getting to the Bubble. They are short stories, told simply, with a twist of humour and a flash of universal wisdom that make them memorable. There are 95 stories in this, his fourth published collection. They will brighten your day, and maybe bring tears to your eyes, and they will make life a bit better for others too. Sales of this book help support Variety—the Children’s Charity.
