Review

Central British Columbia between the Coast Range and the Rockies can be efficiently accessed and traversed by a network of good highways, but the byways are much more interesting. Noted travel journalist and photographer Liz Bryan created this guide to the roads less travelled to share her delight in the breathtaking scenery, little-known historic sites, and stories of B.C.’s past that await discovery off the beaten track in the province’s heartland. She describes 18 leisurely journeys of exploration through this area of mountains, lakes, river valleys, and grasslands, from the Pemberton Valley and Lillooet in the west to Fort Steele and the Kootenays in the east, and from the U.S. border north to Hazelton and the Bulkley Valley. The routes retrace paths taken by the First Nations, early explorers, fur traders, gold prospectors, and the people who homesteaded, ranched, and established communities where trade routes intersected along the rivers. Detailed driving instructions include an outline map of each route and incorporate a wealth of information about the history, industries, wildlife, and natural features of the area. Bryan’s incomparable colour photographs illustrate special points of interest and views to watch for along the way.
