Review

For the past 30 years or so, artist Mary Gazetas and her twin sister, Phoebe, have taken summer paddling and camping vacations together to explore the rugged coastlines of Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands, and the west coast of the B.C. mainland. In 1987 Mary began making journals of these trips, illustrating them with her own drawings and photographs, for the enjoyment of her family and friends. With the publication of this delightful compilation from the journals, she shares many of these intimate family adventures with a much wider circle of friends. Ocean kayaking, canoeing, and camping in the wilderness are not for everyone, but all can enjoy these trips and feel “part of the family” through Mary’s captivating narrative and illustrations.
