Unlike others in her herd content to stand around day after day in the same filed lazily chewing their cuds, Lucille longs for excitement. She is especially intrigued by Thunder, the racehorse. Though reminded time after time that she is “only a cow,” Lucille refuses to give up.
A visit to the county fair presents Lucille with the opportunity she’s been waiting for. Quite by chance, she finds herself, along with Thunder, a participant in a horserace! Lucille quickly realizes that she’s out of her depth, but once again, she refuses to give up. Ignoring her aching hooves, she plods on, cowbell clattering. Encouraged by Thunder, and then the crowd (whose jeers soon turn to cheers), Lucille, dead last, proudly and happily crosses the finish line.
This humorous tale of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds begs to be read aloud and will surely delight young audiences. Dean Griffith’s charming illustrations (with the exception of the title page depicting Lucille standing on her hind legs) add to our enjoyment. The contrast between the fleet Thunder and the ungainly Lucille is particularly effective. Highly recommended.
