Review

Marilyn Smith has a background in theatre and comedy as well as in home
economics. This delightful book combines her interests in food and
drama.

Smith is eager to demystify cooking. If you can read, she says, you can
cook. For the novice cook, her book includes a glossary of ingredients
as well as a section on methods and techniques. Other sections are
devoted to appetizers and salads, vegetable side dishes and pasta,
muffins and quick breads, cookies, bars, squares, and desserts. There
are sections on poultry, rice and grains, seafood, and vegetarian
entrées, but nothing on beef or pork. The ingredients and instructions
are clearly presented, and there are tips and serving suggestions.

The one consistent theme is good food. There are high-fat recipes,
low-fat recipes, hot and spicy recipes, cool and elegant recipes.
Delicious and dependable, Smith’s recipes are as suitable for
entertaining as they are for everyday use.
