Review

Cookbooks aimed at promoting better health are the order of the day. Bon
Vivant! targets the one in four Canadian women over 15 who has
osteoporosis (men suffer from it too). The focus on nutrition and
exercise is exactly what the doctor ordered.

The book’s more than 100 simple recipes (which use both dairy and
nondairy sources of calcium) range from “morning starts,” such as
oranges and dried fruit, to appetizers, soups, salads, pastas,
beverages, and desserts. Each recipe includes an analysis of nutrients
per serving. A few color photos add to the book’s attractiveness.

The idea of combining instructions on exercise with advice on food is
an excellent one and this book is a good starting point for those
interested in strategies for preventing and/or dealing with
osteoporosis. Jan Main is a professional home economist who has been
teaching and writing about food for 20 years. Her book of practical,
healthy, and tasty recipes would make a useful addition to any kitchen
shelf.
