Review

For both collectors and dealers, a Charlton catalogue is an essential
reference. It is the recognized authority on styles, versions,
variations, and retail prices, and is without rival as an identification
guide. All these values apply to this edition of Wade tableware
(previously published under the title Pre-war and More Wades).

Wade ceramics have been produced for 150 years (mid-1800s to 1990s) by
potteries in England and Ireland. The name encompasses an enormous range
in style and decoration, from the sophisticated copper lustre ware, to
homey chintz and overly cute (but valuable) Disney shapes. The products
include tea sets, jugs, plates, butter dishes, mugs, and similar
tablewares, as well as a few specialty items such as biscuit barrels,
toast racks, toy tea sets, nursery sets, and a bit of cookware.

The book contains detailed information (series, description, colors,
clay type, backstamp, and value in Canadian, U.S. and U.K. currency) and
photographs on more than 700 pieces. A chronology of the Wade company,
in its various manifestations, an index of design names, and
illustrations of backstamps round out the work. While this catalogue is
invaluable in its present form, collectors will be demanding color
plates in future editions.
