Review

You either think they’re as ugly as sin or you find them as charming
as a prince of the crown. Toby jugs are not for everyone, but for the
connoisseur, they’re the ultimate collectible, combining history with
craftsmanship, legend and lore with respectable if not shocking monetary
values.

Character jug collectors can be either generalists or specialists,
seeking out the products of a specific pottery or components of a
particular series. Whatever the slant, this catalogue defines the
possibilities and raises the bar.

The catalogue gives the history and development of these squat little
mugs and jugs, covering manufacture, clay bodies and glazes, backstamps,
dating, prototypes and variations, and tips on building a collection.

The catalogue has more than 550 entries, each with photo, description,
coloring, and market value in the United Kingdom, the United States, and
Canada. The selection covers Doulton Lambeth jugs, Doulton Burslem Toby
jugs, Royal Doulton character jugs, and various Beswick jugs, as well as
loving cups, liquor containers, series jugs, and miscellaneous special
issues, such as the rare George Washington jug valued at $13,000.

To Toby jug collectors and dealers, this informative, comprehensive,
and authoritative reference work is without equal.
