Review

Small Worlds features a collection of 115 black-and-white
photographs—sectionalized close-ups of commonplace organic and
inanimate objects such as stacked quarters, pieces of macaroni, pop
cans, grapes, mushrooms, and thimbles. Readers are asked to identify a
whole object by viewing a portion of it, and by referring to a written
clue. The object’s identity is disclosed in the “Solutions”
section at the end of the book. Wheeler’s photographs are entertaining
and educational, presenting a world of unfamiliar miniature views.
Adults or teachers could use this pocket-sized volume to teach children
about nature’s patterns, to show them how first impressions can be
misleading and to demonstrate the importance of context.
