Review

This slim photo album makes a brave showing but falls a bit short of
expectations. The only text accompanying the 50-plus color photographs
are a few words of support by Governor General Romeo LeBlanc, praising
New Brunswick’s beauty and Sylvester’s “consummate artistry.”

While several of the photos do hint of latent artistic talent,
LeBlanc’s praise is generous. Or possibly premature. Most of the
plates show technical expertise in the hands of a photographer still
growing into the artistic aspects of his medium.

A good selection of scenes featuring quaint fish huts, smiling children
in historic costume, pretty sunsets, and early morning mist are
presented in clear, bright, neatly composed shots. But the book lacks
the photographic scope and grandeur needed to compete in today’s
highly visual world.

Images of New Brunswick would make a nice memento of a trip to the
province, and a nice sample of Sylvester’s work at this stage in his
development.
