Review

Dr. Sid Cornish compiled this book of memories while waiting for
open-heart surgery in the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. Between each
memory we are updated on his condition both physically and emotionally.
As he approaches the operation, he experiences natural feelings of
uncertainty and fear but never despair or depression.

The memories themselves reveal a wonderful cast of characters from his
small-town practice. These stoic, hardworking people were more inclined
to believe in the will of their God and in the natural course of life
than in the “new-fangled” medical technology of the 1940s and 1950s.
In his position as the only medical practitioner in the area, Dr.
Cornish learned to treat his patients physically, emotionally, and
spiritually. His collection of memories celebrates a small-town way of
life seldom experienced or understood by city dwellers.
