Review

This book covers the events of over two years of screenwriter Noel S.
Baker’s involvement with director Bruce McDonald and his award-winning
punk-rock “mockumentary” film, Hard Core Logo. The diary not only
chronicles the events and personalities involved in that particular
film, but also provides a fascinating look at the inner workings of the
Canadian film industry and at the whole process of putting a film
together in this country, from concept to premiere.

Baker details the endless rewrites and wrangling over the script, the
late nights of drinking and mornings of hangovers, punk-rocker antics
and male bonding, meetings with Telefilm officials and difficulties with
financing, through the auditioning, filming, editing, and screening of
the film. Despite the numerous obstacles that crop up at every turn,
Hard Core Logo is made and received with critical acclaim.

The text is also well illustrated with photographs of the people
involved in the production, as well as shots from the film.

An essential work for Canadian film collections and Bruce McDonald
fans, this book will be appreciated by anyone interested in filmmaking
in general.
