Review

The Atlantic Canada Nature Guide is an excellent resource for outdoor
enthusiasts and naturalists planning a trip to the Maritimes. Thurston,
who lives in Nova Scotia, is one of Canada’s leading science and
environmental writers and he uses his knowledge to describe numerous
interesting outdoor destinations throughout the four Atlantic provinces.
The text is interspersed with more than 100 striking color photographs
by Wayne Barrett and maps help to orient the reader to specific regions.

The guide is divided by province and is organized according to the
official highway maps of the region. Icons are used to indicate specific
activities (i.e., birdwatching, camping, cross-country skiing, whale
watching) and attractions (i.e., fossils, plants, geological features,
and animals) available at each location. The book is fully indexed and
contains a list of references for further reading and addresses for
additional information. A number of sidebars offer the reader more
detailed information on topics ranging from Irish moss to tidal pumps.

Travelers who prefer to visit national and provincial parks,
conservation areas, forests, and ecological reserves, rather than
museums and art galleries, will welcome the addition of this book to
their library.
