Review
Anyone considering visiting Nova Scotia would be well advised to consult
these guidebooks in planning what to see and do. Sponsored by the Nova
Scotia Department of Economic Development and Tourism, the four
easy-to-use, compact guides provide the reader with suggested places to
visit (e.g., museums, art galleries, beaches, parks, natural sites,
lighthouses, wildlife-viewing sites), in chapters corresponding to the
routes used in the department’s own annual vacation planners, Nova
Scotia’s Complete Guide for Doers and Dreamers and the Scenic
Travelways Map. The volumes, which are richly illustrated with color
photographs and maps, are best suited to travelers planning a road trip.
Each guide is written by one or more experts in the subject area, and
includes introductory comments and an index; all but one offer a list of
selected sources for further reading. All suggested sites are identified
with one or more standard symbols to provide the reader with additional
information (e.g., wheelchair accessible, parking, provincial park,
washroom, picnic tables, outdoor fireplace, admission charge); the
wildlife-viewing volume uses symbols to also identify the types or
groups of wildlife that visitors are most likely to see. This handy
travel series is recommended for public libraries as well as for
travelers to Nova Scotia and residents of the province.
