Review
Job hunting has changed dramatically in the past decade. The rules, the
traditions, the conventions, and the supports are hardly recognizable.
For the older worker, especially, finding a new niche within the
employment market can be a bewildering, confidence-defeating experience.
Fortunately Twombly is there to explain the new curves and to help
job-seekers to map out an effective path.
The book is packed with practical advice, set in the context of
today’s changing nature of work and employment. This approach means
Twombly not only tells the job-seeker what to do, but why. Added to this
is a collection of sample documents, templates for forms and charts,
reference sources, checklists, and all the other tools needed to conduct
an effective job search.
Twombly’s style is light and highly readable. She writes with
authority and empathy, while avoiding any hint of negativity. She covers
the expected networking, cover letters, résumés, and interviews, and
brings some less well known information to the task. This includes the
use of calling cards, informational interviews, what’s really meant by
researching a company, dealing with age discrimination, negotiating
salary, and the details of public pension plans and seniors’ benefits.
This up-to-date handbook belongs in every career resource centre and
library.
