Review

The author of this guide to genealogy in Nova Scotia (now in its fourth
edition) has written about and lectured extensively on the subject. As
well, he is the founding president of the Genealogical Association of
Nova Scotia and the editor of The Genealogist’s Handbook for Atlantic
Canadian Research.

Intended for both novice and veteran researchers, this well-organized
guide provides useful information on the major primary sources, as well
as directions to specialized books, articles, and other sources of
interest to the genealogist. The chapter entitled “Getting Someplace:
The Public Archives of Nova Scotia” describes the manuscript groups
and record groups, along with other sources and finding aids. The
following chapter describes the county courthouses, land and probate
records, church repositories, and historical and genealogical societies.

Genealogical Research in Nova Scotia is highly recommended for
Canadiana collections in public and university libraries, and for
genealogists with an interest in maritime genealogical research.
