Review

The first part of this two-part book chronicles Robert Patenaude’s
personal struggle with leukemia. Patenaude, who was diagnosed with
leukemia in his second year as a medical student, writes frankly about
his emotional response to the illness, his treatment, and his
experiences with the medical system. The second part of the book, aimed
at a lay audience, is about leukemia itself. The signs, symptoms, and
causes of blood cancers are discussed, along with treatment strategies
and side effects of therapy aimed at curing the cancer. The book
includes a good glossary and a list of additional resources, but no
index.

This well-written book is recommended for those interested not only in
the facts of leukemia but also in personal reflections about it.
