Review

This sixth book in the Jumbo Book series presents original and
innovative crafts that can be created with found and/or inexpensive
materials. “Outdoor Art” has 35 projects. These include jewellery
made from rocks and pebbles, a snake made with dried-grass clippings,
dyes created from plants and vegetables, and pressed leaves and flowers.
The materials come from the environment. The author encourages the
crafter to collect these from the backyard, the woods, the beach, and so
on, and to make use of old or used materials as well. The projects are
divided into four categories: digging deep, going green, it’s all
elemental, and fertile ground.

Each of the above is prefaced with an “in the studio” section that
delineates the tools and materials used in that section. This is
followed by the individual projects and their specific artist’s tools,
associated research, and step-by-step instructions. Full-colour diagrams
and photographs round out each project.

This manual is recommended for young people interested in creating
crafts using natural materials. Its instructions are clear and easy to
follow. The illustrations support and clarify the text. Tips and further
information are included as necessary. A glossary and index organize and
supplement the information. Highly recommended.
