Review

Maxine Trottier is a former elementary-school teacher whose passion for
history is demonstrated in these five biographies of notable Canadian
artists.

The artists profiled include the 19th-century painter Cornelius
Krieghoff, who celebrated life in Quebec in his work; Emily Carr, who
immortalized the land and people of the Pacific Northwest; Alex
Colville, the greatest Canadian painter of the magic realism school and
a fine war artist who documented World War II; Kenojuak Ashevak, who is
helping to keep the culture of the Inuit people alive through her
stunning paintings and sculptures; and Tom Thomson. One of the book’s
more intriguing facts is that had it not been for Tom Thomson’s early
and tragic death, there would have been a Group of Eight instead of a
Group of Seven.

Canadian Artists is illustrated with colour paintings and photographs.
The book’s original illustrations are by Tony Meers. This important
and useful book should be in every school library. Recommended.
