Review

A social-cognitive approach to developing intelligent self-control in
adolescents is presented in this workbook for teachers who wish to lead
“living skills sessions” for their students. The book is organized
into units, each focused on a particular skill that is seen as a
component of self-discipline. Each unit includes a reading or writing
activity for students, a worksheet, and an exercise in personal
reflection.

The skills to be developed are self-awareness, managing emotions,
building relationships, and various subskills. There is an emphasis on
relaxation skills, developing a sense of proportion, humor, listening
skills, empathy, assertiveness, and conflict resolution.
Self-confidence, patience, and courage are qualities that the workbook
units are aimed at developing. Teachers are likely to find this
well-organized book a useful and stimulating tool.
