Review

Trust in its myriad forms is the subject of this engaging book.
Self-trust, self-distrust, trust and lack of trust in others, how trust
is lost, and how trust can be regained are among the issues the author
explores. Examples are taken from everyday life, politics, and
contemporary literature and films.

Govier draws on philosophical and psychological sources in examining
the sources of self-esteem, self-worth, and the valuing of others. While
she does not claim to solve the basic dilemmas of trust, she offers a
thorough and sensitive examination of the extent to which such dilemmas
permeate our day-to-day existence. Her stimulating book will appeal to
those with an interest in the mechanisms of human nature and
interpersonal relationships, as well as those who simply wish to explore
the complexities of a basic element of social functioning.
