Review

Q: “Why did the lobster cross the road?” A: “To get to the other
tide.” Q: “Who does a dog quarterback throw to?” A: “A Labrador
retriever.” Q: “What does Canada produce that no other country
produces?” A: “Canadians.”

If you are a groan shark, this book is your meat. It contains 101 very
silly jokes and puns, all with a Canadian theme. You may have heard a
few before; in fact, some of them were likely making the rounds back
when Sir John A. was prime minister. On the other hand, Hershkowitz has
worked hard to insert Canadian content into the collection, and where
else are you going to find jokes about maple trees, Canada geese, and
the British North America Act? The jokes are accompanied by numerous
droll black-and-white illustrations. The final bonus is that the book
can be safely handed to youngsters without having to worry about their
encountering racist, sexist, violent, or vulgar material. Recommended.
