Review

It hardly seems possible that this much-loved fairy tale recently
celebrated its 25th anniversary. This special edition begins with brief
biographies of author Robert Munsch and illustrator Michael Martchenko,
and tells how the two met and began their most successful collaboration.
We meet the real “Princess Elizabeth,” now grown up, a teacher with
children of her own.

A short yet comprehensive section describes how a book is made, from
the author’s initial idea right up to when finished books are shipped
from the printer to bookstores and libraries all over the country.

A page from Robert Munsch’s original manuscript is included, along
with several of Michael Martchenko’s concept sketches. Readers will
enjoy comparing these original illustrations to the ones that got
published, noting similarities and differences.

Interesting trivia is included: The Paper Bag Princess has been
reprinted 52 times, translated into more than 12 languages as well as
Braille (several of these translations are shown, as well as the cover
illustrations from a variety of countries), and has sold more than three
million copies. It has inspired live theatre productions, puppet plays,
and cartoons, as well as a Princess Elizabeth doll complete with paper
bag dress.

Both Martchenko and Munsch reflect on the enduring popularity of their
story while extending best wishes for many more successful years. Their
final, somewhat enigmatic, message to readers: “The End?”

In addition to the familiar Paper Bag Princess illustrations,
Martchenko has created many new works for this anniversary edition.
These, along with the numerous photos, letters, and reproductions that
fill the book, make it a “must-have” purchase for those who have
grown up with Princess Elizabeth and are now sharing it with their own
children/grandchildren. Highly recommended.
