Review

These bright, glossy science volumes are both accessible and attractive.
Their carefully structured format cleverly leads the reader from the
introspective question, “What do you know about [tools? structures?
etc.]” through a logical revelation of information that makes each
volume read like a narrative: examination of previous knowledge, basic
elements of the item in question, diverse specialized examples of the
subject, jobs relating to the field, threats to the subject or inherent
dangers to young explorers. Every pair of pages features either a
“Puzzler” (brain teaser question) or an “Activity” (an
experiment, research task, excursion or personal thinking task). These
activities are an excellent means to make science knowledge meaningful
in the real world.

The Science of Liquids and Solids deals with states of matter, surface
tension, solid shapes, floatation and density, capillary action, and
safety around water and ice. The Science of the Environment looks at the
elements of various habitats, human impact on environments, recycling in
nature, and endangered environments. In The Science of Tools, readers
learn about simple machines, early tools, specialized tools, animals
using tools, and the safe use of tools. The Science of Structures
introduces young scientists to building material; jobs involved in
planning a structure, parts of buildings, bridges, and tunnels; and how
we can build green structures. In The Science of Primates the types,
life cycles, defining features, and social structures of primates are
explored. The Science of Seasons tells us about the solstice and
equinox, hibernation, migration, the equator, monsoons, and animal
adaptation; the final chapter “Seasons in Danger,” focuses on global
warming. A glossary, an index, and a list of relevant Web sites are
included in each book. This is a series that will greatly enhancing a
child’s ability to learn. Highly recommended.
