Review

This is the 19th country featured in The Lands, Peoples and Cultures
Series. Each of the three volumes packs a lot of different subjects into
its 32 pages. While there is subject overlap among the books, there is
little content overlap. For example, gauchos are treated in all three
books, but with the exception of a few phrases, the information in each
book is different. There are some unusual inclusions and notable
exceptions. On the one hand, Argentina, the Culture includes text about
and photographs of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid who made a
brief—and to all appearances historically
inconsequential—bank-robbing foray into Argentina in 1905. On the
other hand, while the very turbulent Argentinian history is addressed at
length, there is little discussion of the economic crisis that has been
crippling the country for years.

All of the volumes are heavily illustrated, each page filled with
high-quality stock photos interspersed with text. Overall, these books
are a good starting place for middle-school students researching
Argentina. Recommended.
