Review

The Fortress Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island attracts thousands of
visitors each year. As they wander about within its ancient walls they
hear the story of how, years ago, a fox was sometimes seen dancing with
a cat who lived inside the fortress.

Using this legend as a starting point, Maxine Trottier has skilfully
blended fact and fiction together to produce this gentle story.
Meticulously researched, the history of Fortress Louisbourg is told from
the perspective of one of the foxes who has always lived in this area.
Regolo Ricci’s beautiful oil paintings add to the text’s dreamy,
poetic quality. Curriculum connections are many, the most obvious being
Canadian folklore, history, and geography. There Have Always Been Foxes
should be a first-choice purchase for school and public library
collections. Highly recommended.
