Review

This book is part family history and part paean to the RCN submarine
service during the two world wars. While the chapter on World War I
consists of little more than a parade of names, there is much of
interest in the book’s record of individual endeavor, which includes
the skilful navigation of a submariner after his vessel was badly
damaged by a mine; the tragic loss of a submarine fired upon by a French
airship; and a Canadian who became the first volunteer reserve officer
of either the British RN or RCN to be given command of a submarine in
World War II. Also included are amusing anecdotes about submarine life,
a chronological list of service of Canadians in RN submarines during
both world wars, endnotes, and a bibliography. This book is an obvious
choice for maritime- and war-museum bookshops.
