Review

Richard Sanger, the author of five plays and a collection of poetry, won
the E.J. Pratt Poetry Medal and Prize and was twice nominated for the
Chalmers Canadian Play Award. Not Spain tells the story of Sophie, a
freelance journalist who travels to an unnamed war-torn city, where she
encounters Andrei. Sophie appears to have everything, while Andrei has
nothing—except his dignity. But things are not as they seem. Full of
twists and turns and vivid detail, Not Spain is at once poetic and
dramatic. Through the character of Sophie, Sanger provides a subtle and
penetrating look at how the media deal with global crises. Satisfying
both heart and mind, this thought-provoking and unsentimental play
forces the audience to question long-cherished assumptions.
