Review

Why are so many people fascinated by large trees? This well-written and
effectively illustrated book is not only about large trees but equally
about the people who have searched them out, measured them, and written
about them. Al Carder has traveled the world to examine and measure
trees, and includes excellent photographs of large trees in both the
northern and southern hemispheres. As might be expected from an author
who is from British Columbia, the focus is on trees of western America,
particularly the Pacific Northwest. The trees of Australia and New
Zealand also figure prominently (the treatment of giant trees east of
the Rockies is minimal). This informative and well-documented volume can
be read for reference or pleasure.
