Review
Ben Gadd, author of the Handbook of the Canadian Rockies, and Chris
Yorath, a respected scientist affiliated with the Geological Survey of
Canada, have produced an excellent study of the geology of Jasper
National Park.
Part 1 (“Understanding the Geology of the Canadian Rockies”) reads
like an introductory geology textbook, complete with photographs,
boldface terms, and line drawings depicting geologic processes. Part 2
is a field guide to the geology of “main recreation destinations and
other points of interest” within the park and its environs. The
geology of individual localities is described in some detail. Each of
the localities is numbered, allowing the visitor to locate the site on
the geologic map included in the book.
Laypersons may be put off by the technical language. All readers will
be disappointed by the poor quality of many of the photographs. Overall,
however, this is an excellent publication—one that belongs in the
geology sections of academic and public libraries.
