Review

Marie loves her grandfather, Poppa, and cannot bear the thought of a
winter without him, as he heads south for the first time to escape the
cold. But Poppa, who is a woodcarver, must go, and he makes Marie a
special goodbye gift of a wood duck.

The seasons in nature and in human life are gently compared and
juxtaposed in this heartwarming story of a young girl coming to terms
with the separation and loss of her beloved grandfather. The surprising
ending confirms the truth that if you love something, you must be
prepared to let it go.

Kasia Charko’s charming illustrations nicely complement the
wonderfully life-affirming story. This is a beautiful book in every way.
Highly recommended.
