Review

As a zoologist, on first examination I was quite ready to dismiss this
book about something strange in the waters off the West Coast as a
foolish confection—the lurid cover alone gives that impression. After
reading the text and looking at the illustrations, however, I came to
realize that the authors (an oceanographer and an eminent zoologist, now
retired) are in fact serious individuals whose aim is to present as
clearly as possible information about this unknown marine creature.

Through newspaper and other published accounts, they establish that
over the last century, many sober and lucid individuals have made
detailed and seemingly sincere submissions on their observation of such
creatures. Furthermore, cultural artifacts of the aboriginal peoples of
the area show creatures that are not too dissimilar to the ones
reported. The authors include a graph summarizing the frequency of
observations through time and tables outlining the creatures’ features
and their relationship to reptiles/mammals long considered extinct.
Although the graph and tables are not of the highest quality, the
illustrations are excellent. The book, as a whole, is an interesting and
entertaining read.
