Review

This addition to the See, Make and Do series covers exploration
activities in the woods and would be very useful to consult before
planning a field trip. Well-organized and informative, the guide is
divided into four sections: Welcome to the Woods; On the Ground, Some
Woodland Animals Close Up, and Woodland Fun and Food. The first section
gives excellent practical tips on safety and trail markings, and
provides basic forest facts. The second section reviews fungi and other
life on the ground and outlines several activities, including leaf art
and spore prints. The third section, devoted to animal tracks and signs,
contains instructions for building a simple observation container for
insects. The final section features twig crafts and a tactile nature
game.

In the Woods offers young naturalists plenty of appealing ideas for
independent observation. Recommended.
