Review

This interesting and thought-provoking book is intended to remind
parents and educators of the role Mother Goose rhymes can play in
children’s language development. Through the book the authors have
suggested many rhymes and related activities to help children develop
word skills, recognize word patterns, and play with story ideas. From
the traditional schoolyard jingles to the historical perspective of
orthodox poems, the value of rhymes is emphasized for its richness of
the language experience inherent within.

The number and variety of rhymes and the many activities included in
the book offer a good selection of the ways rhymes can be used for
instructional purposes. The authors suggest several practical ideas on
how to integrate Mother Goose rhymes into such areas of the curriculum
as history, art, and mathematics. The authors have also provided an
excellent overview of the scope of nursery-rhyme literature, with
helpful references to other experts and sources of information. Mother
Goose Goes to School is an amusing, entertaining, and instructional
guide.
