Review

Scholastic Canada has reissued the 1982 North Winds publication of
Mollie Whuppie and the Giant in a handsome large-format picture book
suitable for library folk-tale collections or home purchase. The story
is well known: a strong-willed, wise, and crafty young daughter, Mollie
Whuppie, tricks the cruel giant, saves her hungry family, and happily
marries the prince.

Robin Muller’s dazzling illustrations are filled with humor and
movement as they carry Molly through her various adventures and daring
escapes. His language is elegantly simple, with accents of poetry and
details of traditional folklore. Happily, the prince waits until Mollie
has gone off and explored the world before they spend “the rest of
their lives in great happiness,” with the price never tiring of
hearing Mollie tell of her marvelous adventures.

Muller’s combination of refined language and beautiful illustrations
makes this a story to remember. Inspirational for young girls, full of
magic and joyful freshness, it is perfect for reading to primary grades.
Highly recommended.
