Review

When Gary and Bob move, with their family, from California to the B.C.
interior, the scene is set for a series of entertaining encounters with
nature and wildlife. Drawing on childhood memories of life in the
outdoors, Todd Lee has produced an endearing and informative collection
of semifictional stories for young animal lovers.

These unassuming and charming accounts of Gary’s and Bob’s mishaps
in the woods, and experiences with a grabbag of woodland creatures, are
full of biological observations and wildlife lore. Whether being treed
by a bear or finding their way home with rudimentary directions observed
from migrating Canada geese, the boys learn valuable lessons about life
and survival.

Lee’s lucid and descriptive prose is both comfortable and
stimulating. The book is enriched by the lovely black-and-white
illustrations of the animals in Lee’s reminiscences. The Snoring Log
Mystery conveys a satisfying sense of unspoiled open spaces, and would
make a useful addition to any school or family collection of nature and
animal books. Highly recommended.
