Review

This adventure book of connected short stories set on an isolated, 1930s
homestead near Williams Lake, British Columbia, begins with a scream
ringing through the night. As in each of the 6- to 10-page vignettes,
the mystery is solved, and the reader is given detailed glimpses of
plant life, wildlife, ranch chores, and outdoor mishaps.

In “Some Kind of Mutt!” Gary’s dog, Duke, interferes with a
roundup of wild horses and Gary gets thrown off his horse. Duke redeems
himself when he leads a search party to the injured man. In “Midnight
Ride” Gary and his brother, Bob, plow through deep snow early one
winter morning to fetch their stray heifer from a neighbor. Predictably,
the weather worsens on the return trip; the brothers fall asleep in the
saddle, and the heifer strays.

These gentle, reflective stories, based on the late author’s own
experiences, convey a sense of innocence and wonder. Recommended.
