Review

The authors of these two books are both biologists who have engaged in
extensive fieldwork. Russell is a caribou expert, while Knudtson is the
author of Orca and the co-author, with David Suzuki, of Wisdom of the
Elders and Genethics.

The Nature of Walruses and The Nature of Caribou both follow a similar
structure. They begin with an overview of the animal’s evolution and
geographic distribution. This is followed by descriptions of the
animal’s life cycle and the waysit has been used by humans (e.g., for
food and clothing) both historically and in modern times. The
exploitation of these animals and the challenges involved in their
preservation are important themes in both books.

The books feature stunning full-page color photographs. The informative
and detailed text is clearly indicative of authors who know that
curiosity motivates learning and understanding.
