Review
“Grinding glaciers, howling hurricanes, and spewing volcanoes” are
some of the powerful forces of nature described in this accessible book.
Supported by simple diagrams, reproduced photographs, and colorful
illustrations by Laura Cook, the book explains many of the natural
phenomena that fascinate children. Sidebars describe natural disasters
ranging from the earthquake that destroyed Kourion in AD 365 to the
eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. The reader learns not only about the
destructiveness of these forces, but about the important role they play
in the balance of nature.
For parents, this book offers answers to the many questions children
ask about disasters and other natural phenomena. It also helps them
teach their children how to avoid, and protect themselves from,
dangerous situations. For the school, it offers simplified explanations
for children learning to do research. The Day of the Twelve-Story Wave
would be a valuable addition to any library. Highly recommended.
