Review

This extremely well-organized guide to the seashore is the brainchild of
acclaimed children’s nature writer Diane Swanson. In this short book,
Swanson manages to describe and facilitate hundreds of simple seashore
projects, enabling children to discover the wonders of ocean life for
themselves. None of the activities requires adult involvement (or
interference), and all are packed with personal learning potential and
are easy to implement. Children can follow their own interests—whether
they crack open driftwood to look for shipworm holes or catalogue sea
birds in their seashore journals is up to them. Swanson just gives them
some ideas and simple tools to get started.

The book is simply written, provides a great deal of useful and
interesting information, and will hold children’s interest. Warren
Clark’s illustrations are pertinent and effective. Highly recommended.
