Review

With these four titles from the Welcome to the World of ... series,
Diane Swanson has done a good job of supplying upper-elementary-level
information about moose, porcupine, beavers, and skunks.

Each book begins with a chapter called “World of Difference” that
discusses the remarkable attributes of the animal. Subsequent chapters
cover habitat, foods, communication, and young. Sidebars are often used
to convey specific facts. The behavioral information supplied about each
animal is more detailed than the information one would find in a
standard encyclopedia. The text is readable, age-appropriate, and
designed to hold the interest of a child. Each book ends with a one-page
index.

The photography in all four books is excellent. Many of the images have
both scientific and artistic value. One marvels, of course, at the
close-up photographs of skunks.

This fine series is recommended for public and school libraries.
