Review

The author of the highly acclaimed Her Story presents, in this follow-up
volume, another 16 biographies of women from Canadian history. Her aim,
as stated in the introduction, is to celebrate “the courage, strength
and determination of women [who] are often invisible in history
books.” The women under examination range from midwife to artist to
nuclear physicist, and all 10 provinces are represented.

Included in each chapter is a list of suggested readings. The book also
contains a chronology of significant dates between the years 1535 and
1986, as well as numerous photographs. The subjects themselves are a mix
of familiar figures—Margaret Duley, Agnes MacPhail, Ashoona
Pitseolak—and lesser-known ones. An inspiring and very readable
collection. Highly recommended.
