Review

Lewis Clark (1907–1974) was a renowned naturalist and nature
photographer who published seven books about the wildflowers of the
Pacific Northwest. This field guide is a comprehensive work for the
serious botanist, compiled by the Clark estate. It features wildflower
photographs and descriptions of the most common or showy plants.

Large colour photographs showing the flowers in close-up views are
annotated with details of stem, leaf, and flower descriptions to aid in
identification. Plant ranges are discussed, as are any closely
associated plant relatives. For the novice wildflower enthusiast, the
guide is a handy portable directory.

Plant identification would have been simplified by grouping the flowers
according to shared characteristics such as colour or habitat.
Furthermore, short details of plant history, use, and local lore would
be welcomed. With the encroachment of city boundaries and industrial
development on wildflower fields, guides such as this one help to
educate and engage the budding naturalist.
