Review

Jamie Bastedo is a northern Renaissance man—a celebrity writer,
musician, actor, broadcaster, scientist, educator, and environmentalist.
He is the author of five books on northern nature, including Shield
Country and Reaching North.

Falling for Snow is a good-humoured look at that most reviled or
exalted commodity: snow. It covers every angle: the science (glaciers,
snow crystals, avalanches), the biology (snow fleas, caribou, voles),
the literature, the history, and the sport. Bastedo writes in a
colloquial manner, yet doesn’t oversimplify the subject—there’s
plenty of serious science. But it is Bastedo’s sense of fun and
infectious enthusiasm that will cause even the most chilled spirit to
warm up to all the wonders of snow.
