Review

Since the first edition of Canadian Social Policy was published in 1978,
editor Anne Westhues notes, the concept of social policy has taken on a
more global relevance. In addition, there are far more women writing
about social policy issues today.

The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 is an overview of social
policy written by Westhues. Part 2, “Current Social Policy Issues,”
contains papers on child poverty, Native people and the social work
profession, homelessness, single mothers, workfare, homosexuality,
immigration, health care, aging, and the disabled. Part 3,
“Policy-Making Processes,” includes papers dealing with federal
initiatives, international efforts, and various other avenues for change
and policy development. Each part is preceded by a summary introduction.

Westhues, a professor of social work at Wilfrid Laurier University,
concludes this informative and thought-provoking book with an
examination of the social policy challenges that are looming on the
horizon.
