Review

Long-time resident Bill Proctor is our guide in this exploration of the
islands and coastline from Johnstone Strait to Queen Charlotte Strait
between northern Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland. The
winds and currents here are wild and treacherous, but the bays and
inlets of the archipelago have sheltered Aboriginal villages from the
earliest times. More recent arrivals have established permanent homes
and made their living by logging, fishing, and trapping. Bill has lived
and worked here all his life. Along with a passion for collecting
artifacts, he has a storyteller’s talent for absorbing and relating
the local history. As he guides our boat through the islands, he shares
tales about the colourful old-timers who lived there, their way of life
in such a remote location, and the plants and animals native to the
area.

Each chapter covers one leg of the journey, with maps outlining the
waterways between the islands and indicating points of interest. There
is a detailed index. Line drawings by Yvonne Maximchuk and
black-and-white photographs illustrate the text.

This is much more than a good guidebook for boaters. It is the personal
view of one who knows and loves the area well.
