Review

Now in its third edition, this excellent resource is endorsed by the
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and its Health Check program. The
entire book is based on a shopping-cart analogy in which the shopping
cart is separated into three parts. The largest part is reserved for
whole-grain products, fruits, and vegetables; a smaller section is the
place for milk, meat, and meat alternatives; and fats and oils occupy
the smallest section of the cart.

The first part of the book provides information on how to shop, how to
control your weight, how to become supermarket-savvy, and how to read
labels. The sections that follow address each of the three parts of the
shopping cart, with a wealth of information provided about each food
type. The last section discusses the Health Check program and libelling
with the aim of helping the reader to become a more informed consumer. A
good index is supplied.

A drawback is the overly busy design, with two different fonts used and
different font sizes and boldness. That quibble aside, HeartSmart
Nutrition is a real gem; it belongs on the shopping list of all
Canadians who are interested in changing their food habits.
