Review

Good cooks know that nothing compares with fresh ingredients. This
Canadian Gardening book is a great resource for cooks who want to
improve their gardening skills and for gardeners looking to expand their
cooking repertoire. The content is arranged by season, starting with
spring asparagus and ending with winter squash.

Other garden delights include peas, radishes, rhubarb, salad greens,
strawberries, spinach, beans, blackberries and raspberries, cherries,
chicory, corn, cucumber, lavender, okra, tomatoes, tomatillos, apples,
garlic, grapes, kohlrabi, beets, Brussels sprouts, cranberries, onions,
and potatoes.

Each chapter contains nifty suggestions, such as how to keep your
Jerusalem artichoke from taking over your garden or how to fix the
nitrogen level of your soil. Each chapter also includes sidebars that
tell readers about the best varieties of plants for their particular
part of Canada and what they should know about growing and maintaining
their plants.

The recipes include Duck Breasts with Cherries, Radicchio and Green
Bean and Cherry Tomato Salad with Hazelnuts, Barbecued Corn with
Chipotle Butter, Sautéed Cucumbers with Cream and Parsley, Lavender
Blueberry Soup, Mexican Melon Salad, Okra with Shrimp and Rice, Red
Pears and Blue Cheese with Watercress, Tomatillo and Chicken Enchiladas,
Sea Bass with Tomato and Olive Sauce, Apple Fritters Jenna, Aioli,
Salmon in Grape Leaves with Verjuice Butter, and Kiwi Veronica.

The text is supported by more than 200 colour pictures, a three-page
index, and a sources page. This lovely and informative book is sure to
please both cooks and gardeners alike.
