Review
It has been almost 10 years since the first edition of Classic Hikes in
the Canadian Rockies was published. In this fully revised and updated
version, which includes 14 new hikes in Alberta’s Kananaskis Country
and elsewhere in the Canadian Rockies, award-winning author Graeme Pole
has produced a beautiful, informative, and extremely practical guide to
some of the most well-known trails in Western Canada.
Pole has been living in and writing about the Canadian Rockies for more
than 20 years. He has written both fiction and non-fiction, and his
wilderness essays and photographs have been widely published.
Classic Hikes is replete with stunning full-colour photographs,
historical vignettes, and useful references to climate, gear, first aid,
and bear safety. Included are 63 established trails that are divided
nicely between day hikes and overnight hikes of varying lengths, and
constitute the most popular treks for which the Canadian Rockies are
famous. An easy-to-read sampler allows you to plan your hike by
duration, total distance, and elevation gain. Each hike contains a
full-colour topographic map and well-written instructions that guide you
from the trailhead onwards; “behind-the-scenes” information about
the area’s flora, fauna, and trivia provide an informative backdrop.
This second edition is also available in an easy-to-use and extremely
efficient deluxe binder edition, which allows you to choose a hike,
remove the page, and insert it into the protective plastic sleeve
provided, thereby lessening your load in your pack. A handy index,
recommended reading list, and contact information to begin planning
conclude the volume. Information on camping is provided where
applicable.
Classic Hikes is an essential volume for outdoor enthusiasts in British
Columbia or Alberta, or for anyone planning an outdoor adventure in
Western Canada.
